- features & benefits
the r&s®smw-k78 option makes it possible to generate radar echoes of static and moving objects at various, user-defined distances. depending on the configured object, the r&s®smw200a automatically sets the delay, the doppler frequency and the rf output level. for moving objects, the time lag and output level of the echo are continually updated.
configurable radar echoes
the following figures show the flexible definition options for objects producing the echo. static objects can be set at a defined distance from the radar system, and the size of the object can be defined via the radar cross section (rcs).

for moving objects, it is possible to define the velocity, the start range and end range from the radar. it is also possible to assign objects a specific movement pattern, e.g. a onetime movement from the starting point to the endpoint or a continuous movement from the starting point to the endpoint and back. superposition of echoes can easily be simulated by mixing static and moving objects.

tests via wired connection or via the air interface
the next picutre shows the test setup for a wired test. the radar transmit signal is received by the r&s®fsw, digitized in realtime after the downconversion and made available to the r&s®smw200a. the actual echo generation is then performed in the r&s®smw200a, which manipulates the digitized signal so that is indistinguishable from an actual echo signal.

- wired test.
alternatively, a radar can be tested via the air interface. in this case, the radar transmit signal is received via an antenna connected to the r&s®fsw input and digitized in the r&s®fsw. the r&s®smw200a then transmits the generated echo signals via an antenna connected to the rf output. this possibility is shown in the next picture.
-
- open air test.
in both scenarios, the r&s®smw200a remotely controls the r&s®fsw and configures it so that the user perceives both instruments as a single system that is operated via the r&s®smw200a user interface.
for customers wanting to perform purely receiver tests, the r&s®smw200a can also be used as an echo generator without the r&s®fsw. the transmit signals are then generated in the digital baseband of the r&s®smw200a, e.g. using the r&s®smw-k300 option together with the r&s pulse sequencer software.
