multiple input, multiple output (mimo) is used in mobile radio (3gpp release 7, eutra/lte) but also in wireless local (ieee 802.11n) and regional radio networks (ieee 802.16, e.g. wimax^™). the higher the statistical independence of channel characteristics, the better the data rate and transmission quality. for mimo tests, therefore, simulating these channel characteristics is absolutely essential. since there is one transmission from each transmitting to each receiving antenna, n² fading channels have to be provided in the simulator for an n×n mimo system. due to the geometric antenna arrangement, the channel characteristics are not independent of each other under real operating conditions. as a result, the individual channels must be intercorrelated to realistically simulate the entire transmission path.

the r&s^®amu200a baseband signal generator and fading simulator can be equipped with two baseband generators and two fading simulator boards. the r&s^®amu-k74 option then enables four logical fading simulators that can be correlated by setting the parameters in the channel matrix within the generator. this means, for baseband tests on mimo systems up to 2x2, users only need one r&s^®amu200a baseband signal generator and fading simulator .together with a two-path r&s^®smate200a vector signal generator or two r&s^®sgs100a rf sources, the r&s^®amu200a provides rf signals for 2x2 mimo systems up to 6 ghz (r&s^®smate200a) or 12.75 ghz (r&s^®sgs100a). baseband measurements on mimo systems with more antennas, for example 2x4 mimo, can be performed by combining two r&s^®amu200a. by adding one or two r&s^®smate200a vector signal generators, this setup can also be extended to cover rf measurements.
