aerospace & defence applications

the a&d market is increasingly making use of digital baseband signals, e.g. in modern radar systems and in beamforming phased-array antenna systems.

  • radar applications

a bandwidth (rf) of 528 mhz and a memory depth of up to 1 gsample make it possible to generate complex pulsed signal scenarios with narrow pulses and very short rise and fall times, which are commonly needed for radar applications. for generating such pulsed signals, the r&s® pulse sequencer software (r&s®afq-k6 option) is a powerful and flexible tool with an intuitive user interface and integrated waveform display including analysis capabilities. plug-ins allow the user to add proprietary/classified pulse contents that meet the high demands of a&d customers for data security.

the matlab transfer toolbox enables easy interoperability with matlab for customers that want to use their own custom built signals.

  • phased-array applications

for developing and testing phased-array antennas, the afq100b offers an accuracy of below 20 ps when starting several instruments synchronously. this is very important, as additional delay would deteriorate the phase relation between the different signals. these phase relations are essential in phased-array applications. moreover, the instruments allow flexible and easy generation of the necessary waveform data.

  • meeting security standards

to meet the high security requirements demanded in a&d, the internal hard disk can be removed whenever necessary. thus, sensitive data can always remain in a secured area.

ultra-wideband applications

ultra-wideband is a radio technology that can be used at very low energy levels for short-range high-bandwidth communications. the fcc and itu-r define uwb in terms of a signal for which the bandwidth exceeds the lesser of 500 mhz or 20% of the center frequency. one approach to this is wimedia-uwb which uses a multiband ofdm technique (mb-ofdm). this new standard will for example be used as physical layer in the next bluetooth generation and for wireless usb. the wimedia specification divides the uwb frequency spectrum of 7.5 ghz (3.1 ghz to 10.6 ghz) into 14 bands of 528 mhz each. the information transmitted on each 528 mhz band is ofdm modulated (122 subcarriers). to achieve mb-ofdm the bands are grouped together into 6 band groups. the ofdm packets are then spread using a time-frequency code (tfc).

the r&s®afq100b is the right choice for developing and testing uwb components and receivers in the baseband. its system bandwidth of 528 mhz fits for one wimedia band which can comfortably be generated with the r&s®winiqsim2 option r&s®afq-k264.
